Neighbors marked by 30 year differences

In the town of Newton-Conover near Hickory, neighboring residences reflect the embossed tin shingles in the 1870s; the other, 1900s.

Thus far, this location is the only one where I have seen two classics of their period side by side.

The home whose roof we stored reflect common characteristics of the 1870s. For example the porch is fairly small, the roof possesses the peaks with ledges and there is an inside gutter. The design on the shingle seems to have disappeared by the 1880s

The roof across the street was probably built around 1900. The porch is quite large, the upper roof is more visible perhaps to showcase the shingle design more, and there is no gutter.

As a general rule, gutters seemed to be a missing element in embossed tin shingles. The shingle design is the signature style popular rom 1900 onward.

There does exist one similarity between the two specimens: porch roofing has ben replaced due to wear and tear.
